The Client: Oceanites, an Antarctic Research & Conservation Nonprofit

Oceanites is a Washington-based nonprofit and global leader in Antarctic research and conservation, best known for its decades-long work monitoring penguin populations and the health of the Southern Ocean ecosystem.

As Oceanites moved from a founder-centric model toward broader institutional leadership, the organization needed a communications infrastructure that could better support its scientific work, engage donors and conservation partners, and communicate the impact of its Antarctic research to a wider audience.

The Communications Challenge for an Antarctic Conservation Organization

Oceanites had decades of scientific field data and a committed network of researchers, expedition volunteers, penguin counters, and conservation partners. However, its website, internal communications, fundraising tools, and social media presence had not evolved alongside the organization.

To strengthen its communications and support long-term growth, Oceanites needed:

01

A modern nonprofit website that clearly communicated its Antarctic research and conservation mission while improving donor and partner engagement.

02

Internal communications tools for expedition teams, penguin counters, and conservation partners working in the field.

03

A stronger digital fundraising strategy, particularly for year-end donor campaigns.

04

A consistent and manageable social media strategy to increase awareness, communicate scientific impact, and support donor engagement.

Our Nonprofit Communications & Digital Strategy Approach

What began as a website redesign evolved into a broader communications partnership spanning digital strategy, science communication, field operations, fundraising, and social media.

A portion of our ongoing support is delivered pro bono as part of our B Corp commitment to supporting organizations working toward positive social and environmental impact.

Nonprofit Website Redesign & Science Communication

We audited Oceanites' existing website and restructured its content to improve clarity, navigation, and audience engagement.

We also refined website messaging to communicate Oceanites' scientific leadership, Antarctic research, conservation work, and impact in a way that could be understood by donors, partners, and the public.

Internal Communications for Antarctic Field Operations

We developed communications guides, branded presentation templates, and field-ready toolkits for penguin counters and conservation partners.

These resources created a more consistent system for sharing field updates, research protocols, and impact stories across Oceanites' geographically dispersed network.

Digital Fundraising Strategy & Donor Engagement

We helped Oceanites transition elements of its fundraising outreach from a print-based model toward a digital-first approach.

This included redesigning fundraising materials and incorporating QR codes that connected supporters directly to Oceanites' donation page, creating a simpler donor journey while making campaign performance easier to measure.

Social Media Strategy & Ongoing Channel Management

We developed a repeatable social media content system built around branded templates and a rolling content calendar.

The system gave Oceanites a practical way to consistently communicate its Antarctic research, conservation programs, field activities, and organizational impact without placing an unsustainable workload on its internal team.

The Results: Stronger Communications for Antarctic Conservation

A Website That Communicates Scientific Impact

Oceanites gained a modernized digital presence that more clearly communicates its Antarctic research, scientific credibility, and conservation mission to donors, partners, and the public.

More Consistent Field Communications

The new field communications toolkit provided expedition teams and conservation partners with consistent resources for sharing information, research protocols, and stories from the field.

A More Accessible Digital Fundraising Experience

The shift toward digital fundraising created a more direct path from campaign materials to online donations while giving Oceanites a more measurable approach to donor outreach.

A Sustainable Social Media System

A structured content calendar and reusable branded assets gave the internal team a more manageable system for maintaining Oceanites' social media presence and increasing visibility over time.

Key Takeaways for Conservation & Nonprofit Communications

Scientific expertise creates impact only when the right audiences can understand why the work matters.

For conservation nonprofits like Oceanites, effective communications require more than individual campaigns. A connected system across the website, field communications, fundraising, and social media makes it easier to translate scientific research into stories that donors, partners, and the public can understand and act on.

For Oceanites, the goal wasn't to change the science or the mission. It was to build the communications infrastructure needed to share decades of Antarctic research more clearly and consistently with the audiences that support its work.
